MATE Frequently Asked Pond Pump Questions:
Q. How often do I have to clean my pump?
A. Due to our innovative design, our pump does not have to
be cleaned as often as other pumps. Brushing of debris from
the outside of the case will be occasionally necessary dependent
upon pond conditions and water. A more thorough clean will
be required once or twice a year. The foam should only be
fitted to the pump if the customer is using the fountain option.
This will require cleaning more often, but due to our outer
case design, this is still less than many competitor's foams.
Q. How expensive are they to run?
A. Fish Mate pumps are designed to be extremely cost-efficient.
Our medium pumps if run over five years can give a saving
of up to $509 in comparison to our competitor. Our large pumps
over the same period can provide an amazing saving of $1222
when compared to a similar pump!
Q. What size solids can the pump handle?
A. Our medium pumps are designed to handle solids to 1mm,
whereas the large pumps as supplied will handle solids to
1.5mm. If required, sections of the large pump casing may
be cut away to allow solids handling of up to 12mm.
Q. Will my pump harm wildlife in my pond?
A. The outer strainers on all Fish Mate pumps are designed
to be wildlife friendly by passing particles of a 1.5mm maximum
size through. The strainer covers on the large pumps can be
modified as above, to let larger particles pass through if
required. Our pumps also draw the pond water in from a larger
area than many of our competitors which minimizes the pull,
and allows wildlife to escape the flow more easily.
Q. Are Fish Mate pond pumps electrically safe?
A. Yes they are. Remember that Fish Mate pumps have passed
all of the appropriate national and international safety regulations
- they are UL and BEAB approved, and have a proven track record
of safety.
Q. What are the advantages of ceramic bearings and polymer
shafts?
A. The whole range of Fish Mate medium pumps have a unique
combination of ceramic bearings and polymer shafts to give
the pumps maximum service life. The Fish Mate large pumps
have been designed to use very large ceramic shafts and bearings
which give these high-powered pumps superior life.
Q. Can the pump be used in 6" of water?
A. We do not recommend using any Fish Mate pump in less than
12" of water as pond water this shallow can fluctuate
greatly and is at risk of freezing. Fish Mate pumps must not
be run dry.
